How Our Troop Is Run

The Patrol Method:  Our troop (currently) is organized into 3 patrols. Each patrol has 5-8 boys led by a a Patrol Leader (elected by the boys) and an Assistant Patrol Leader.  Patrols camp together, cook together, and have fun together. The troop has a Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) and an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL) who plan and conduct meetings and assist the Scoutmaster in ensuring smooth operation of the troop. Once boys have mastered basic camping skills (tents, knots, fires, cooking, cleaning, etc.), they have ample opportunities to grow in various other leadership positions, such as Quartermaster (where are those tents?), Librarian (who has that Merit Badge Book), Historian, and.....Webmaster !!!.

Regular Troop Meetings:  Weekly troop meetings are held on Monday nights at Bethel United Methodist Church, 6903 Blantyre Rd, Warrenton, VA (off Rt. 17 N).  Meeting times are usually 7:00 - 8:30 PM. During the school year, meetings will typically be held whether or not there is a scheduled Monday school closing. However, meetings will not be held on any Federal holidays which fall on Monday. Our Troop usually takes a break in our annual program during the latter half of August, and resumes our program after Labor Day. The only expected cancellation of weekly troop meetings or outdoor activities is for severe inclement weather. Also, we do not have regular meetings between Thanksgiving (or so) and Christmas.  During that period we have our troop "meetings" at the tree lot at Rankins Hardware selling Christmas Trees.

Administrative Meetings:  Our Troop Committee meets the Thursday evening after any Tuesday Roundtable from 7:00 - 8:00 PM at Bethel UMC. The Troop Committee consists of registered parents of Troop 161 Scouts. Our Patrol Leader Council (SPL, ASPL, PL's, and Scribe) meets at the Scoutmaster’s house in Warrenton on the first Tuesday of each month, from 7:00 - 8:00 PM.
